Climate variability in the SE Alps of Italy over the past 17 000 years reconstructed from a stalagmite record

چکیده
Stalagmite SV1 from Grotta Savi, located at the SE margin of the European Alps (Italy), is the first Alpine speleothem that continuously spans the past c. 17 kyr. Extension rate and dOc record for the Lateglacial probably reflect a combination of temperature and rainfall, with rainfall exerting the dominant effect. Low speleothem calcite dOc values were recorded from c. 14.5 and 12.35 kyr, during GI-1 (Bølling–Allerød) interstadial, which, in our interpretation, was warm and wet. The GS-1 (Younger Dryas) was characterized by a shift to heavier dOc, coinciding with d Cc enrichment and extremely low extension rate (<8 mm/year). These characteristics indicate that GS-1 climate was cool and dry in the SE Alps. Calibration using historical data revealed that there is a positive dOc/dT relationship. A 1!C rise in mean annual temperature should correspond to c. 2.85% increase of SV-1 dOc. We reconstructed a slow and steady temperature rise of c. 0.5!C since 10 kyr BP, in broad agreement with reconstructions from pollen data for SE Europe. Stalagmite SV1 indicates that climate variability in the SE Alps has been influenced by the Mediterranean Sea for the past c. 17 kyr.

Reconstruction of temperature in the Central Alps during the past 2000 yr from a yO stalagmite record
The precisely dated isotopic composition of a stalagmite from Spannagel Cave in the Central Alps is translated into a highly resolved record of temperature at high elevation during the past 2000 yr. Temperature maxima during the Medieval Warm Period between 800 and 1300 AD are in average about 1.7 8C higher than the minima in the Little Ice Age and similar to present-day values. The high correl...
متن کاملAssessing the variability of precipitation during the Holocene from stalagmite records
Stalagmites can be dated very precisely with Th/U. The growth rate of stalagmites is generally in the range between 30 and 100 μm year. Stable isotopes sampled at a resolution of 50-100 μm yield information with a resolution ranging from a sub-decadal to centennial scale. Precipitation determines the growth periods of the stalagmites and the stable isotope signal is mainly a proxy for the inten...

The growth of a well-dated stalagmite from Barbados records high infiltration rates into the karst aquifer and hence increased rainfall intensity between 6.7 and 3 ka BP in agreement with records from Lake Miragoane, Haiti [Hodell et al., 1991. Reconstruction of the Caribbean climate change over the past 10,500 years. Nature 352, 790–793], mainly reflecting the insolation maximum of the Norther...

The long-term history of Zeiraphera diniana Gn. (the larch budmoth, LBM) outbreaks was reconstructed from tree rings of host subalpine larch in the European Alps. This record was derived from 47513 maximum latewood density measurements, and highlights the impact of contemporary climate change on ecological disturbance regimes. With over 1000 generations represented, this is the longest annually...
متن کاملPlant-wax D/H ratios in the southern European Alps record multiple aspects of climate variability
We present a Younger DryaseHolocene record of the hydrogen isotopic composition of sedimentary plant waxes (dDwax) from the southern European Alps (Lake Ghirla, N-Italy) to investigate its sensitivity to climatic forcing variations in this mid-latitude region (45 N). A modern altitudinal transect of dD values of river water and leaf waxes in the Lake Ghirla catchment is used to test present-day...
